Dal Khichdi

Ingredients (serving — 2 people)

  • 80g rice
  • 80g dal (mix of moong & toor dal)
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1 medium tomato chopped
  • 2 green chillies (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/3 tsp each of turmeric & coriander powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/3 tsp onion garlic powder (kanda lasun masala) (optional)
  • 1 tsp each of mohri & jeera
  • Pinch of hing
  • Curry & coriander leaves
  • Ghee

Recipe

  1. Wash rice & dal together in a bowl. Soak in water & keep aside for 10 mins.
  2. Take a cooker, add washed dal & rice, 2 cups water, 1/4 tsp turmeric & a pinch of salt. Mix well & cook this for 3–4 whistles on high flame.
  3. Now, heat around 2 tbsp ghee in a pan on low flame.
  4. Add mohri, jeera, hing & let it fry for a few secs. Then, add curry leaves.
  5. After a few sec, add chopped onion & green chillies. Let this cook for a min on low-med flame.
  6. Add ginger garlic paste and cook for 2 mins on low flame.
  7. Add tomatoes, mix well & cook for 3–4 mins on med flame.
  8. Add all spices — turmeric, coriander, red chilli & onion garlic powder & mix well & let it cook for a min on low flame.
  9. Add the boiled dal & rice to the pan, 1 tsp salt, around 1 cup water & mix well.
  10. Cover & cook for 3–4 mins on low-med flame.
  11. Turn off flame & add chopped coriander leaves from top. Your Dal Khichdi is ready!

Tips

You can add 1tsp ghee at the last step for more enhanced taste.

Only toor or moong dal can also be used to make dal khichdi as per your preference.

If you dal/rice mixture has become too dry from the cooker, you can adjust water accordingly in your last step for a good mix.

Adjust green chillies & red chilli powder if making for elders or kids.
